New Hampshire Manufacturing Week

From coast to coast, businesses and educational institutions throughout the United States celebrate Manufacturing Day each fall. The day, recognized by presidential proclamation in 2014, has been widely considered a success. In fact, the recognized, for the first time, in all 50 states in 2014, with more than total 1,600 events.

In the Granite State, however, the typically one day celebration of technology, innovation and skilled jobs is extended to an entire week. In fact, New Hampshire stands as the lone state to successfully organize and implement a full Manufacturing Week.

Led by New Hampshire Manufacturing Extension Partnership (NH MEP), the Division of Resources and Economic Development (DRED), the Business and Industry Association (BIA), the New Hampshire High Tech Council (NHHTC), the Community College System of NH, Keene State College, the New Hampshire Dept. of Education and many other partners, Manufacturing Week 2014 saw 1,100 New Hampshire students participate in tours at 54 companies, and hundreds more visited local community colleges to learn about New Hampshire’s vast array of innovative manufacturing programs, including, but not limited to, on-the-job training and many other available career gateways.

“Just like any job, it’s really important for students to be able to see real-world applications of what they learn in school and what the job possibilities and job opportunities are,” said Spaulding High School senior Ricky Heath who toured RP Abrasives in Spaulding, among other local manufacturing facilities. “So it’s really nice to be able to have the connections to go out and experience what the real working world is like. It’s something you can’t really learn in school, you can’t really learn off a YouTube video.”

The week is capped each year by the annual Governor’s Advanced Manufacturing and High Technology Summit, which featured workshops, seminars and dozens of exhibitors.
