Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing

CORE Manufacturing Skills Training – The course is based on ASME Y14.5, Y14.5.a and Y14.43 standards.

2 Day Course
December 14 & 15, 2021
8:30am – 12:00 pm

Audience

Participants with basic math skills and some understanding of basic blueprint reading. The participant will come away understanding the basic philosophy and reasons for using GD&T and have a basic understanding of how GD&T controls work.

This class is not appropriate for highly experienced quality technicians and design engineers, but could serve as an overview for newer inspectors, engineers and designers who have not had formal instruction in GD&T.

Participants who complete the course and demonstrate basic understanding will receive a Certificate of Successful Completion- Introduction to GD&T. These students will also meet pre-requisites for a future class in “Intermediate GD&T”.

Program Content
Instruction will focus on the basic use of Datums, Position Control and Profile Tolerancing, which are the most used Dimensional Controls. The other controls will be briefly discussed. Future intermediate and advanced classes will go into more depth on all types of controls used in GD&T.

Students will learn about geometric dimensioning and tolerancing by being taught an overview of geometric tolerances and their applications. Some topics include:

  • How GD & T differs from direct tolerancing
  • Philosophy and Advantages of GD&T
  • Brief discussion of ASME 14.5- 2009 and 2018 Standards
  • Datums – establishing the part in X, Y and Z planes – How/why datums are chosen
  • Defining surfaces with Profile controls
  • Overview and basic definitions of symbols and terms used in GD&T

Program Format: Three 2.5 hour sessions held on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Students will receive package of Exercises to be completed during class. A test will be provided on the last day to be completed and returned by email (scanned) or by US mail. Test will be graded and returned directly to the student. The instructor will be available to review test results with students on an individual basis, by email, if requested.
